A North Carolina Field Study to Evaluate Greenroof Runoff Quantity, Runoff Quality, and Plant Growth
نویسنده
چکیده
Recent federal and state regulations require storm water runoff to be treated by structural controls in ultra-urban development. Several practices have been used in North Carolina; however, a less common storm water management practice is the greenroof. Two extensive greenroofs have been constructed within the Neuse River Basin of North Carolina. Each greenroof retained approximately 60% of the total recorded rainfall during a nine-month observation period. The average peak flow reduction for both greenroofs was approximately 85%. Water quality data indicated higher concentrations of TN and TP were present in the greenroof runoff than in the control roof runoff and in the rainfall at each greenroof site. This may be a result of N and P leaching from the soil media; the soil media is composed of 15% compost. Preliminary results from a soil column test of three different greenroof soil medias indicate that leaching can be reduced with less organic matter present in the soil media. Vegetation growth observed after the first year showed growth was significantly higher (α < 0.05) in 100 mm (4 in.) deep soil media than in 50 mm (2 in.) deep soil media.

Amending greenroof soil with biochar to affect runoff water quantity and quality.
Numbers of greenroofs in urban areas continue to grow internationally; so designing greenroof soil to reduce the amount of nutrients in the stormwater runoff from these roofs is becoming essential. This study evaluated changes in extensive greenroof water discharge quality and quantity after adding biochar, a soil amendment promoted for its ability to retain nutrients in soils and increase soil...
متن کاملEvaluation of the TBET Model for Potential Improvement of Southern P Indices.
Due to a shortage of available phosphorus (P)-loss datasets, simulated data from an accurate quantitative P transport model could be used to evaluate a P Index. The objective of this study was to compare predictions from the Texas Best Management Practice Evaluation Tool (TBET) against measured P-loss data to determine whether the model could be used to improve P Indices in the southern region....

Soil erosion is one of the most threatening issues for crop production and environmental qualities, especially for soil and water resources. Appropriate knowledge about total soil loss and runoff is valuable in order to perform soil and water conservation practices in watersheds. EUROSEM, "a single event, dynamic and distributed model," was developed to simulate soil loss, sediment transporta...

متن کاملTemporal Variations of Runoff and Sediment Generation during the Growing Season in Rain-Fed Lentil: A Case Study in Tikmehdash Region of Eastern Azerbaijan
Extended abstract 1- INTRODUCTION The contribution of crop cover to reducing runoff and erosion depends on the type, height, density and stage of plant growth. The literature review indicates that because of the different life forms, the effect of plants on the reduction of runoff and erosion are different at different growth stages [13]. However, no comprehensive studies have been conduc...
